CARS OF THE WEEK
It's been 80 years since Mercedes-Benz began manufacturing vehicles with factory-integrated special protection, and in that time, the company's range of armored vehicles have been chosen by diplomats, royalty and industrial titans the world over. To mark this special anniversary, Mercedes today has unveiled the latest in a long line special protection Mercedes models – the S 600 Pullman Guard – a vehicle that blends generous accommodations and a supreme level of comfort with integrated "Highest Protection" safety (that's the equivalent of a European B6/B7 resistance level, enough to withstand rifle-launched projectiles from military weapons as well as shrapnel from hand grenades and explosive charges).
To give you the best possible insight into the new model, we're going to do something a little different today. Rather than offering a quick overview of the model, we're instead going to go more in-depth, offering a seven part look at both the S 600 Pullman Guard as well as the history and development of the special protection Mercedes models as a whole. Although it is quite a bit of content to read, we think you'll find it intriguing, so stay tuned over the next couple hours to see our Mercedes-Benz special protection coverage in its entirety.
First up, a quick overview of the new Mercedes S 600 Pullman Guard, along with a number of photos highlighting the new model (click any picture to enlarge).
Enjoy ladies and gentlemen.
RENNTECH president Hartmut Feyhl said, "Last year, it was a coincidence that we were releasing a new, 695 hp performance package for the 65 series AMG cars at around the same time. We sent out a press release that said 'HP War Not Over.'"
"This year it is the same timing again, and we have something much more extreme to announce for our 20th Anniversary."
2009 is the company's 20th anniversary, and Feyhl is trying to show people his company is the "foremost authority on Mercedes-Benz performance tuning." They will bring several limited edition cars to market this year, starting with the 777.
The RENNTECH 777 begins with an SLR McLaren, and adds on a new aero kit, with "big wing, splitters, and skirts. A top speed of 210 mph is expected, thanks to the 5.5-liter supercharged Kompressor V8. New suspension, a stronger transmission, and a limited-slip differential will be included.
The 2009 Nissan 370Z is a straightforward sportscar: one wedgelike body style, two front seats, modest cargo area, and a 3.7-liter V-6 that pumps out 332 horsepower. This review covers the all-new coupe; for those looking at the '09 convertible, please refer to our 2008 Nissan 350Z review.
Unlike so many recent introductions, the exterior dimensions for the 2009 Nissan 370Z are trimmed down from 2008. Competently placed controls make work behind the wheel a pleasure, and little cues—such as the fact that the main gauges move with the tilt steering column—help ensure solid ergonomics. Redline is at a steep 7,500 rpm, but there's no advantage to revving it that high; the engine has a fat torque curve and produces plenty of usable power at lower revs.
The new 2009 Nissan 370Z offers two transmissions. Most enthusiasts will prefer the smooth-shifting six-speed manual, which now features rev-matching, a feature that blips the throttle during downshifts. Fuel economy is actually better than the previous model, at 18 mpg city, 26 mpg highway for the automatic.
On the track, TheCarConnection.com editors note that the shorter wheelbase and wider track improve the car's handling dynamics, and it's big fun to toss around. And on the road, we generally like the way the 2009 Nissan 370Z drives. Drivetrain noise, particularly gearbox whine, is prevalent, reminding you that Nissan spent its development money on making the 370Z go fast, not quietly. In terms of safety, the 2009 Nissan 370Z includes every dynamic feature available, including traction control, ABS, and electronic stability control. In the event of an accident, front and side airbags are standard, as well as roof-mounted side-curtain airbags. Only two options are available: the Sport Package (that includes some fantastic-looking 19-inch wheels) and the Navigation Package.
Cruise control, power windows, and Nissan's Intelligent Key keyless entry/start are all standard. The current top sound system is from Bose, and the separate DVD-NAV system includes a 9.3GB Music Box Hard Drive with an iPod interface.
They claimed this to be the Best Car and the fastest they've ever built today, this is a special car which they will only produce 5 units for this model, anyone who wants to be a star in the crowd must own one of these, introducing the Lamborghini Murcielago LP710 by EDO competition and the popular Christian Audigier.

The GT is here thanks to the passion of two enthusiasts: Citroen designer Takumi Yamamoto and the boss of Polyphony Digital – the firm behind the award-winning Sony PlayStation racing game, Gran Turismo – Kazunori Yamauchi. Essentially, the pair collaborated to create a supercar not for the road, but for the computer screen.
The car in the game uses a fuel cell, but this roadgoing model features a race-derived 560bhp V8 engine. No official figures have been provided, and Citroen is keeping tight-lipped about its performance. With no sound deadening, the noise is awesome. The big V8 roars through the rev range and pops and bangs angrily when you lift off the throttle. But it’s not really the engine or how big the brakes are that’s important – it’s the way it looks.
Gran Turismo’s designers said the GT needed to be aesthetically pleasing from the rear, too, as that is the view most gamers will see while playing. Citroen has delivered. The carbon diffuser hangs beneath a massive air vent, horizontal LED lights and wing.
Inside, the space-age interior would make NASA proud. The only similarity between the GT’s cabin and any other road car is its pedal layout. The dashboard is covered in a copper material and features flared lines and edges, while the switchgear is in a race-style aluminium pod to the right of the driver.
The GT has been brought to life to prove that the French company can take a fantasy machine from the computer screen to the road and that it is able to build supercars if it so wishes. Unfortunately, the only way anybody will ever own one is by buying a PlayStation 3 and a copy of Gran Turismo 5: Prologue, then earning one million credits.
But while you won’t be seeing it in a showroom near you any time soon, maybe its dramatic design cues will shape the Citroens of tomorrow.
Style, comfort and power: these are the words that best describe the latest CL65 Coupe since each of these qualities is found in the coupe and more.
The elegance of the coupe comes from the CL 65’s elegant yet powerful body. Kicherer improves its exterior with carbon parts of the highest quality. This carbon package consists of a front grill, mirror shells, a rear diffuser and a front apron with a deflector constructed from precious material. The chassis moves the car about 25 millimeters closer to the tarmac and provides it with a much more athletic characteristic. At the rear, the mirror-finished stainless steel exhaust system with four magnificent tailpipes is combined into a dynamical unity that offers powerful acoustic qualities as well.
